While we were in New York I took it upon myself to advertise for Laurelwood, a wonderful organic brewery from Portland. I photographed Laurelwood paraphernalia around the city, in popular places, in beautiful places, and in less familiar places. I am currently organizing these photos (and videos) into a presentation that I will give to the brewery...but they don't know it yet. My hope is that they will exchange the work for a dinner for two or something like that. It would be nice if I could continue to market for them in the future. I will let you know what happens. The above picture is at Neighborhood Public Radio, which was broadcasting live in New York. I talked about Laurelwood on the air. Below is a street vendor who sold me a pretzel and posed for this picture.
I've been sitting on this exchange project for longer than I wanted to because I've become wrapped up in other things. I think I just became so busy lately that it was pushed down my list of priorities, but I have realized that I am very much attached to it. My renewed interest may have come from some of the work I saw at the 2008 MFA show at California College of the Arts. Overall the show was good, but let me show you a couple pieces that stood out to me for various reasons.
This is one of about 5 Proposal Plaques by Andrew Thomas Regal Tosiello. What I love is that it is a simple proposal for an artist to receive health care, to be provided for by those who believe he/she is an important part of society. Makes sense, right? His other plaques had added humor by proposing the artist and curator to have gang relations of sorts. This particular plaque resonated strongly with my own interests.
Sara Thacher, who I have mentioned before in this blog, set up a bartering system for a handful of art pieces from the MFA show. The idea is that if someone was interested in one of these specific pieces in the show, they could trade pre-determined services for it. For example, there were some drawings that one could attain by promising to professionally photograph this artist's work every year, and every year you would receive a new drawing from this person as well. That particular exchange actually sounds pretty good for, say, a gallery.

Exchange for my work
