A month before the event Utopia - A Science Fiction Marathon, I had been thinking a lot about our visit to Sisters in Action for Power. They had talked about the gentrification that had been occurring on Alberta Street and they had posted signs in their window questioning the motives of Last Thursday - an event that at one time was an Alberta Street art gathering but had become an event for getting drunk and causing problems. Being that we are currently working on a project on Alberta street I wanted to really consider what Sisters in Action told us.
Originally, I was not going to document this event, so I have no pictures. I have decided to tell you, via the blog, that the event did take place and to give you a very brief overview. I arranged a meeting and purposefully/actively did not take part in the Last Thursday event in January. Instead a few of us hung out and watched the sci-fi movie The Lathe Of Heaven. In this movie, a scientist tries to control this guys dreams, because whatever this guy dreams actually becomes reality. So, the scientist tries to make all these things happen that he thinks will be great, but his plan always backfires. We then talked about how this movie might relate to our current situation if we continue to talk about "the people" on Alberta street "needing" to have "their problems fixed" by a bunch of artists.
