Making a Fort

On Saturday my wife and I invited some friends over and we built a fort. We ate ice cream and brownies inside and we watched about 5 episodes of Flight of the Conchords. Additionally we tried to call each other by our Lord of the Rings names. I was Samwise Gamgee son of the Old Gaffer, Stephanie was Rosie Latton (Samwise's future wife), Natalie was Galadriel, and Chadwick was Aragorn son of Arathorn. We made a "secret exit" for faster access to the kitchen and in order to meet firecode. We turned one of the couches around so that we could tuck the blankets in at a higher level and so that we didn't need another blanket to reach all the way to the ground. Chadwick, who is a mathematician, informed us that the tripod we were using for the center of the fort had decreased stability because we had raised the center of gravity, but it was okay because we had an even disbursement of pull from the blankets.

How does this relate to my art? Maybe not at all..but maybe it does. Harrell told me that for this term I should just try things that I would not normally try. I know that in my art there are certain things that I want to get done...like using business in artistic and experimental avenues, but I've also been doing things that are making me self-aware. I've just decided that if i have an idea I should roll with it. The Looking Out a Window event came from this, the fort idea came from this. You may not know this about me, but I'm also interested in watching movies and reviewing moviews. In fact, I've been reviewing movies for well over a year. Also I really want to have a science fiction movie marathon. Additionally I want to sleep on couches sometimes instead of my bed, and I want to eat dessert before I eat dinner, I also want to start a gum pole. Why? Just because because I can. There seem to be these rules of what we can and can't do, or what we should and should not do in order to "be normal." I have these quirky things that I enjoy doing and now I'm just highlighting them. If you've been reading my blog you know that I'm interested in creating alternatives to what is "normal" because I don't always agree with "normal" (at least as far as our economy and the way we do business goes). So, making this a part of my practice is okay for the time being.

Interestingly enough, as Katy (another S.P. student) has pointed out, even Robert Smithson found some way to incorporate science fiction into his conceptual ideas. Read about that here.

I love these pictures. In fact, I think that having fun is a very serious and important thing. Serious people might not tell you that though. If you took the fort a step further, what would it look like to you?

Eric,
yesterday, with your little blog on my mind, i made a fort with my 1 year old son Jude. We had a lot of fun together, and he got his toy vacuum cleaner and vacuumed the fort. Well done.

Yay, forts are neat.

Sorry about the deleted comment... 'twas an accident and I can't figure out how to undo it.

But I would love to argue with you sometime about how Oldenburg was a hack... (In fact, of the three, Oldenburg was the most original... I just don't care for him.)

Hope all is well.
